From Here: Liberated Bodies
Exhibition Statement
In this body of work I am exploring the position that this is where we go from here. The conditions are what they are, the history has been written upon our bodies and the land. We arrive and we are all told stories from birth. Even before birth, memory has been encoded into our bodies.
Systems that we did not build are at work on us before we are conscious. But as we read our memories and tell our stories, we are incrementally liberated from the ownership these bonds imply. And from the weight and heaviness that are the conditions of ownership: guarding boundaries, enclosure of truth, and limits placed on what can be spoken. The telling of memory helps to reshape it; in fact, to form it in order that it can be born.
This birth is a release from the bindings created by ownership. Both for those who own and those who are owned.
In the moment after liberation, we are free. We can choose the value of memory, current conditions and future possibility. Where do we want to go from here?
